The long read

More than a scoreline.

From local beginnings to the big occasions. This is Aston Villa.

An introductory history of the men’s first team, from the club’s origins through 1982. Selected turning points and honours, rather than a complete season archive; later results are outside this edition.

A chapel club with wider ambitions

Aston Villa began in 1874, with a winter game for members associated with a Wesleyan chapel. George Ramsay became central to the early development. What began as a local sporting venture grew into one of Victorian football’s strongest clubs. Source →

Helping to build league football

Villa were founder members of the Football League in 1888. The 1890s brought a succession of championships, including the league and FA Cup Double in 1897. Villa Park opened that same year, giving this successful period a lasting home. Source →

A long way down

The early honours did not guarantee permanent success. In 1970 Villa fell into the Third Division. The distance between that low point and the achievements a decade later is essential to the story: European glory followed a substantial rebuilding job. Source →

From recovery to Rotterdam

The 1980–81 championship restored Villa to the top of English football. In the European Cup final the following year, Peter Withe’s goal and substitute goalkeeper Nigel Spink’s performance helped defeat Bayern Munich. The 1–0 win made Villa European champions. Source →
