The long read

More than a scoreline.

From local beginnings to the big occasions. This is Chelsea.

An introductory history of the men’s first team, from the club’s origins through 2021. Selected turning points and honours, rather than a complete season archive; later results are outside this edition.

A ground before a team

Chelsea were founded in 1905, with Stamford Bridge already in place. That order matters: a club was created for an existing sporting venue. The Bridge became the fixed point through eras of high-profile players, uneven results and later trophy-winning teams. Source →

The first title and the cup years

Ted Drake’s side became league champions in 1955. The 1970 FA Cup was won after a replay against Leeds United, followed by the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971. Success was possible, but financial strain and relegation also shaped the following decades. Source →

A different scale of success

The 2004–05 Premier League title ended a fifty-year wait for another championship. Chelsea retained it in 2006. Domestic cups and further league titles followed, turning occasional triumphs into a sustained presence among the leading teams. Source →

Two very different European finals

In 2012, Didier Drogba equalised against Bayern Munich before scoring the decisive shoot-out penalty. In 2021, Chelsea defeated Manchester City 1–0 in Porto. Both brought the Champions League trophy, though the routes and the teams were different. Source →

More than a ground.

Stamford Bridge

Stamford Bridge predates Chelsea: the stadium opened in 1877. The club was founded in 1905 to play there and has remained on the same site.
