The long read

More than a scoreline.

From local beginnings to the big occasions. This is Everton.

An introductory history of the men’s first team, from the club’s origins through 1995. Selected turning points and honours, rather than a complete season archive; later results are outside this edition.

Two clubs, one dividing moment

Everton’s origins date to 1878 and St Domingo’s. They became Football League founders in 1888 and won their first championship at Anfield in 1891. A dispute over the ground led to the 1892 move to Goodison Park; Liverpool was then established at Anfield. Source →

Dean and the pre-war titles

The 1927–28 championship is inseparable from Dixie Dean’s 60 league goals. Everton won further league titles in 1932 and 1939, with an FA Cup in between. The record makes clear that the club’s strongest eras stretch far beyond one famous team. Source →

Kendall’s Everton

Howard Kendall’s side won the FA Cup in 1984, then the league and Cup Winners’ Cup in 1985. Another league title followed in 1987. The European trophy remains a defining achievement of a team that excelled both at home and abroad. Source →

The 1995 cup

Everton beat Manchester United 1–0 in the 1995 FA Cup final. It was the club’s fifth success in the competition. This introduction stops at that victory, with Goodison as the setting for the history told here. Source →
